Chris will talk about the DIYLILCNC project, an open source set of plans for a low-cost, easy-to-build robotic fabricator. Specific topics will include: crowdfunded hardware development; the upcoming release of version DIYLILCNC v2.0–aka the BigShoulder; an in-progress software development project aimed at fostering open-source physical design & hacking collaborations.

The main goals of dorkbot are: to create an informal, friendly environment in which people can talk about the work they’re doing and to foster discussion about that work; to help bring together people from different backgrounds who are interested in similar things; to give us all an opportunity to see the strange things our neighbors are doing with electricity. dorkbot isn’t really a forum for formal artist talks or lectures, but rather a chance for diverse people to have friendly conversations about interesting ideas.

This summer I recorded a course for lynda.com’s [amazing] online video training library. Lynda has been a great learning tool for myself and many other creative folks I know. I’d definitely recommend checking out their site if you’re doing anything with digital media. A little about the course:

Game Character Creation in Maya is a thorough overview of techniques for creating characters for video games or real-time rendered applications. Chris Reilly’s course covers low-poly modeling, texturing and animation, using 3D model and texture assets created in Maya and Adobe Photoshop. The course also includes an overview of Unity 3, including importing characters and making interactive animations with the Script Editor. Exercise files accompany the course.

Maker Faire NYC 2011

The Open Hardware Summit is the world’s first comprehensive conference on open  hardware. The Open Hardware Summit is a venue to discuss and draw attention to the rapidly growing open source hardware movement. Speakers at the Summit include world renowned leaders from industry, academia and the DIY community. BERLINER LISTE covers a broad spectrum ranging from contemporary sculpture, painting, drawing to installation, video art, performance and photography.

BERLINER LISTE – fair for contemporary art and photography – is an active and alternative platform for contemporary art. Since BERLINER LISTE was established in 2004, the fair became Berlin’s largest art fair and a cultural and social highlight.
In addition to both established and new galleries from Germany and abroad, project stands have also been offered directly to international artists. Therefore it is possible to follow the latest developments in art in their unfiltered form. DIYLILCNC 2.0 - Open-source plans for a low-cost CNC mill.

Taylor Hokanson and I are planning to release a second-generation design for our open source DIY CNC mill, the DIYLILCNC.  We’re raising funds through Kickstarter, an awesome distributed fundraising platform.  Folks who contribute can vote on design upgrades they’d like to see, or even have a part named after them!
